Hybrid cars and download-able ring tones

June 27th, 2005 | J Lee | Cars

Yet another unforeseen problem or opportunity is revealed through the mainstream practice of Toyota hybrid cars.

Because the hybrids run on a battery at low speed, making them almost silent, Toyota is experimenting with different "feedback" noises. Kazuo Okamoto, who is spearheading the project says so far none has proven acceptable, with too much risk that the noises become the annoying equivalent of the Nokia ring tone.

So could another business come in the way for Toyota’s hip sub-brand, Scion and its record label?  Allow customers to download the car equivalent of mobile phone ring tones for a fee?
