Nokia 770: paradigm shift in the making

July 18th, 2006 | J Lee | Gadgets

Presenting the Nokia Internet Tablet (with Google Talk instant messenger), in a class of its own. It is NOT a phone. It is a re-definition of what a communication device SHOULD BE.

Current products such as:
- PDAs and smartphones can browse the web, but small screens and poor support for JavaScript and plug-ins make browsing a cramped and unsatisfying experience.
- UMPCs have standard browser but the package is too big and expensive
Nokia’s 770 Internet Tablet fits in the middle, in terms of size, price and features. The 770 is purely a lifestyle product. Not too app/hardware heavy like a PDA.
- With its own version of OS (Internet Tablet OS 2006, a Linux-based development platform called Maemo) with VoIP support.
- You can connect by WiFi (802.11b/g) or BT.
- Google and Nokia have an agreement for this product to have Google Talk (instant messenger+VoIP) pre-installed.
- Use it as a speakerphone to make VOIP calls.
- Download a copy of Freader and it’s an ebook reader.
- Install Maemo Mapper and you can use it to browse Google Maps or navigate with a Bluetooth GPS.
- You can browse your Flickr photos with NFlick.
- Other activities supported by the 770: IM/email connectivity, RSS reader, AV player, internet radio, etc.
However, it is limited by the number of products/software available with porting to the Maemo OS platform. If Nokia can continue upgrading this OS and the open source community keeps developing useful tools, the Nokia 770 can further define this segment.
