Two roads diverged in a career road map

December 20th, 2006 | J Lee | Office Space, User Experience

There is a fork ahead in my career road map. And the current situation eerily points to another case of Brownian Motion. This time more or less is not because I’m less goal motivated but a result of what is available in the open job market.

I have a strong preference to continue and stay within the ICT realm. My personal drive and the objective for my reason of being is to be foresight-oriented in all things relevant to life and work. In other words, this hunger to learn about technological developments is what drives me to learn and define user experiences (i.e., what is perceived satisfactory and what is not, in terms of user expectations and actual experience). In the end, I’m on the constant look out for what new tool will enable me (and peers like myself) to ENJOY LIFE in the long run. The thing for me is bridging the gap between technologies’ promised benefits and actual user needs/wants. Thus, the devilishly-fast paced ICT appears to be the place for me.

The other road represents the consumer goods sector including automotive. Particularly with automotive industry, the usual excitement is absent and replaced with a depressed gloom with survival written over it. With the exception of Toyota, everyone else seems to be barely trudging along. And having had previous experience with an automaker, I suffocated under snail’s pace that dictates the product lifecycle and general tech developments. I’d prefer to avoid this route…

In a place like Korea, where the national culture is soaked in technology and all things turbo-charged, I will continue in wait.
