Hyundai Automotive Group seeks English-speakers

February 2nd, 2007 | J Lee | Seoul Searching, Cars

Having had previously worked at Hyundai Motor, my eyes/ears are sensitive when they break the news. It seems the attention span is waning these days.

I came upon something that made me chuckle, then squirm.

The Hyundai Automotive Group, which includes Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, seeks to hire more English-speaking expatriates who are currently living in Korea to work at its headquarters in Yangjae-dong, Seoul.

the decision to seek out expatriates was based on a need for English communications, adding that such skills were important to the automaker because of its network of foreign subsidiaries and dealers

That’s good and all but I really must question this. The HR departments for both Hyundai and Kia have a huge, uphill battle ahead in creating this infrastructure. Case in point, the interviewers ONLY spoke Korean. And when heated issues between Korean and foreign colleagues erupted (usually based on cultural differences, bias or misunderstanding), HR stood by without action or plan.

My point is, how will the Hyundai Auto Group handle these issues once they hire them? Will they adopt equal opportunity employer practices?

I applaud their initiative and hope they succeed in providing a healthy workplace for all.
