Using a mobile phone as a DAP and digital camera

February 7th, 2007 | J Lee | Seoul Searching, Mobile

Good to see Sony Ericsson has come out with their new mobiles.

Sonyericssonw810I own a W810i that I picked up in Stockholm in Spring ‘06. As Korea does not support GSM, its currently used instead as a robust DAP and as a digital camera. Its quick acting auto-focus is accurate enough for me to leave the full-fledged digital camera home.

I picked up the bar-type SKY U130 this past winter expecting a positive user experience but came away wounded. The mobile is now used purely for voice calls and text messaging. Its user interface is poor and the auto-focus camera function in comparison is sluggish. Overall the hardware appears to be holding up (knock on wood), but the software is not cohesively put together. BUT its a bar-type in the clamshell (folder-type) heavy Korea, I can’t complain.

Until Sony Ericsson enters the Korean market this year partnered with SKT, I have to wait for a full fledged mobile experience. I’m sorry but the Samsung AnyCalls are just not worth calling home about. My experience of using them both in Korea and in the States has been frustrating with unsound build integrity and sloppy customer service.

Or, when the iPhone is launched later this year, its highly possible I could have a new bar-type MP3 player + digital camera. I’m not certain if it will support VoWiFi, but it does have WiFi so there has to be a solution for making calls over it.
