A quick way to make a buck, the Chinese way

I won’t be buying any thing “Made in China” for pharmaceutical or human and pet consumption for a while. The past couple of news headliners regarding unscrupulous Chinese and their shadowy ingredients for food and other consumables is downright scary. Now there is a NYT story of Chinese companies that made and sold the cheaper diethylene glycol1 as glycerin. All to make a profit, but tragically 365 Panamanians paid with their lives after ingesting cold medicine containing the counterfeit glycerin.

The story comes after the Chinese adding melamine scrap, the impure waste of an industrial chemical, to wheat gluten. Animal feed producers often mix into the feed to artificially increase the reading of the protein.

From another NYT article:

“Our chemical products are mostly used for additives, not for animal feed,” said Li Xiuping, manager at the Henan Xinxiang Huaxing Chemical Company in central Henan Province. “Melamine is mainly used in the chemical industry, but it can also be used in making cakes.”

Shocking.

This is a global issue that needs to be recognized by our governments. Something needs to be done with the nonexistent safety regulations in China. Our food chain and medicine cabinets are in obvious danger. Incredibly their government is reluctant to do anything about it. And worse they may have no idea what is going on within their borders. So it seems as long as its not a political threat, no one budges.
