Buying a puppy in Seoul

July 6th, 2007 | J Lee | Life in Korea

From a handful of new candidates we’ve narrowed it down to a white schnauzer. I’ve located a couple French Bulldogs but I fear its lifestyle is incompatible with the beagle. The extent of their exercise is 20-30 minutes tops, while the beagle is 1-1.5 hours. Boston Terriers are in the approximate price range, but availability wins out.

Too few reputable retailers or breeders out there1 and the legitimate ones demand a huge premium. Interestingly, while there are less in number of the white schnauzers their cost is still cheaper than the BoTerriers.

Another issue in Korea, there are no organized shelters like the HSCPA or Humane Society. Since there are no free roaming dogs in the streets there isn’t a huge demand for these shelters. I’d definitely adopt a mix-breed; I’ve adopted rescued dogs in the past but again that was in the States.

During this new dog shopping experience I’ve learned beagle puppies are one of the top 5 bestsellers. But you won’t see many reach 1-year old in Seoul at least thats what I’ve seen and heard. When they reach 6-months to a year, their evil and destructive side has come into the scene. Thus, many of these apartment dwellers are sent off to the countryside where they live out their days or end up as someone’s meal.

A news story that has caused a uproar here lately - someone selling dog meat over the net.

Anyway, the white schnauzer is considered a rarity as its color is a genetic abnormality in the breed, and not another color choice. We’ll be going from eastern Seoul to a western suburb to check out the pup this Saturday. Hopefully the pup will be healthy and cute enough, and with a well-mannered temperament.

  1. the retail shops off the infamous ‘dog’ street in Chungmuro are known for selling parvo-infected puppy mill pups at full prices↩
